Prefolds & Flats
Prefolds are rectangular pieces of material that are thicker in the middle and thinner on the sides. These are some of the most basic types of diapers and probably the ones that people picture when you mention cloth diapers! Prefold cloth diapers are inexpensive, simple, absorbent, and dry fast, but they do require a cover to hold in moisture and there is a learning curve. Typically people use pins or a snappi to hold the prefold on the baby, but prefolds and flats can also be folded into a diaper cover.

Flats are similar to prefolds, but instead of having a thicker layer in the middle, the thickness is uniform throughout the flat fabric. These are also quick to dry and inexpensive to use. Sustainable Babyish makes high-quality flat diapers.
